How are you at setting goals?

If you do set them do you find it hard to stick to them?

I have done in the past. And I have found that adding feelings and meaning to my goals helps me stick to them a hell of a lot more!

A few weeks ago I shared a top wins exercise with you (check it out if you haven’t already.) I think this is a super important exercise to help us focus forward to the next year. It is a given that our ‘new world’ is going to continue for the foreseeable. This means plans can get thrown off at a moments notice. But having goals will help you keep steering your ship in the right direction, and allow for contingency if things get thrown off course.

Here are a few pointers for goal setting in 2021

  1. Make your goals SMAFT

You will most likely have heard of SMART goals (which stand for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and timebound.)

I like to swap out the R with an F which stands for ‘felt.’ When we attach feelings to our goals we can tap into what it will feel like when we have achieved them. Next year sticking to our goals is going to be more important than ever, so try adding a feeling to them to help you stay focused and committed.

  1. Have a Plan B

You may have big plans for next year, and nothing should stop you achieving them! Life however has a funny way of throwing us off course, and a global pandemic can certainly provide that uncertain ground. So having a few plan b goals, just in case you get thrown off temporarily will help you keep going. That could mean altering how you deliver something, how you can adapt if you only had half the time you thought (due to isolating and looking after your children if they are off school.) This can look as simple as having contingency planning in place and a support network that can ensure you keep going as much as possible.

  1. Dare to dream

What do you want to achieve that are big dreamy goals that provide a good amount of stretch and eeek factor? What would expanding your comfort zones look like? What have you always wanted to do but have never got around to doing it? What would really make your year feel WOW? List them out to make them happen!

I for one am using my word for next year ‘discipline’ to help drive me, keep me focused and away from unhealthy distractions so that I can make 2021 count.

Let’s do this!

Much love
