As I stood backstage at the Brighton Dome in 2017, my heart raced with fear.

Just 24 hours prior, I had received the unexpected opportunity to present a TEDx talk. The nerves were palpable, the stage was enormous and my mind was clouded with doubts and panic. Little did I know that this pivotal moment would eventually lead me to uncover the idea worth spreading that changed the course of my journey.

How often have you come across an idea that resonated with you and stayed with you long after you heard it?

One of the film references I regularly use in my talks and training is the blockbuster movie Inception.

In the film, the main character Dom Cobb says:

‘AN IDEA IS LIKE A VIRUS. RESILIENT. HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS. AND EVEN THE SMALLEST SEED OF AN IDEA CAN GROW.’

Chris Anderson, Founder and Head Curator for TED also says:

“Your number-one mission as a speaker is to take something that matters deeply to you and to rebuild it inside the minds of your listeners. We’ll call that something an idea.”

These two quotes have been the driving force for all the work I have done over the past few years in helping people to share their ideas, messages and stories through speaking.

And there is no better way to rebuild your idea inside someone else’s mind than by crafting an idea worth spreading.

Case in point: I want to give a shout out to Jessica Lorimer, who I helped at the beginning stages of her talk creation for TEDx Kingston Upon Thames.

Her idea worth spreading has already made a huge impression given the number of views it has accumulated in such a short space of time, and is a fantastic example of seeding an idea at a societal level that others need to hear.

You can watch her talk here

But I hear you saying ‘I don’t have an idea like that though!’

And that’s where you may be wrong.

Because I truly believe everyone has a TED worthy idea inside them.

If you are passionate about something, and want to help others with that passionate idea then I have some things to help!
