I’ll cut to the chase.

When I see people giving talks, presentations or sharing content on social media, a lot of it is  2D. This two dimensional way of communicating is a trap that many fall into and it involves SHARING information.

You have knowledge to share, so you share it, and it often comes out of your head the way you naturally want to communicate it.

Pretty normal right?

The downfall with just sharing information, is that you lose a large percentage of your audience to the distractions of the world. This is particularly poignant when posting on social media or delivering a talk. (Note: virtual talks are EVEN worse for this!)

So how do you engage people and have them sitting on the edge of their sits and listening to every word?

How do you make your communication 3D?

You use stories.

It’s a skill that our ancestors gave us and adds a big dollop of magic to your words because using stories has the power to connect, inspire, engage and build trust. It gives us all the feels and is super powerful.

If you need some help with this, I’m sharing SIX different types of stories that you can use to inject a load of welly into any type of communication that connects with an audience.

Then & Now

Use this when you want to pin point two moments in time. This is great when sharing a personal story or a case study story for your clients.

Watch the short video explaining ‘Then & Now’ in more detail.

The lightbulb moment

This is a great story to include if you want to share an epiphany or marked moment in time where a realisation or great idea came to you. What was it and where were you when it happened?

Watch the short video explaining the lightbulb moment in more detail.

I’m not perfect

A fantastic way of connecting with your audience, and building trust and relatability. Being vulnerable and sharing down moments and mistakes shows that you are real like the rest of us!

Watch the short video explaining ‘I’m not perfect’ in more detail.

Them & us

This is a great story to use to highlight the similarities within a group of people. When used in a positive way it is effective in communicating with your ideal client audience, what connects them and how you can help them.

Watch the short video explaining ‘them & us’ in more detail.

It’s like…stories

These stories help share something complex in an easy-to-understand way by using an analogy. Whenever you tell this type of story think ‘it’s like…’

Watch the short video where I share an example

Golden nuggets

A golden nugget makes a story useful, inspiring or action-provoking by explaining the wisdom, learning, or reason behind sharing the story itself.

Watch the short video which explains golden nuggets in more detail.

I’d love to know how you use these stories in your social content, talks and presentations or anywhere that you are engaging with your audience.

Give it a try, get in touch and let me know!

If you’d like more of this, hold tight. In a few days time I’m going to be inviting you to a free event that will focus on storytelling as just one of the ways you can amplify your voice, stand out and be heard. Keep a look out for the next email!

Much love

Helen
