We’ve all felt it, that doubting voice that shows up when we least expect it, telling us we don’t belong. Imposter syndrome is one of those nearly universal experiences, affecting everyone from entry-level employees to seasoned CEOs.

In my latest podcast episode, I sat down with Lisa Moore, president of the Lewes Speakers Club, to unpack the layers of imposter syndrome and explore ways we can rise above it.

Here’s what’s really going on with Imposter Syndrome:

  • It’s a protector, not a bully: often labelled as a “negative” mindset, imposter syndrome is actually an ancient response. Lisa and I discussed how it stems from our brain’s survival instinct, protecting us from perceived threats. When stepping on stage or presenting in front of senior executives, this response is activated, just as it was in times past to help us avoid predators.

  • It’s often triggered by ‘perceived thoughts’ of others: one of my personal realisations was how often imposter syndrome is sparked not by real feedback but by imagined judgments of those around us. Whether it’s a room full of strangers or a crowd of colleagues, this self-doubt feeds on our interpretation of others’ thoughts.
  • One of the most liberating takeaways from our conversation was that we don’t need to “erase” imposter syndrome, we can learn to coexist with it. In fact, Lisa calls it a superpower.

Why? Because that inner hesitation often signifies care and passion for what we do.

If you’re leading teams, presenting, or stepping into new roles, tune in here to explore how to meet imposter syndrome with self-acceptance and courage.
