As a Leader, speaker, coach, or consultant, have you ever found yourself paralysed by social anxiety?

I understand how you feel.

From childhood, I struggled with social anxiety. Blushing, feeling like I was in the spotlight when anyone asked me a question in a meeting, and putting on emotional armour were daily occurrences.

Overcoming these challenges has been one of the most rewarding journeys of my life.

In my latest podcast episode, I delve into the evolutionary roots of social anxiety, discussing why avoidance becomes a coping mechanism and how the fear of rejection underpins our anxiety.

Why is this important?

  • Impact on Relationships: Avoidance of social situations can hinder forming and maintaining relationships.
  • Career Advancement: Social anxiety can impede your ability to perform in meetings, presentations, and networking events, affecting your career growth.
  • Mental Health: Social phobias often co-occur with other mental health conditions, such as depression and generalised anxiety disorder (I myself was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.)

Common reasons why you might feel social anxiety:

  • Fear of rejection
  • Fear of saying the wrong thing
  • Fear of losing your place or stumbling over words
  • Fear of blushing or going red
  • Fear of not having anything interesting to say
  • Fear of not knowing enough

Six strategies to overcome social anxiety:

  1. Own Your Greatness: Understand who you are and what you bring to any situation.
  2. Ground Yourself: Use techniques like deep breathing and logic to minimise catastrophic thoughts.
  3. Use Power Poses and Words: Boost your confidence with physical and verbal cues.
  4. Adopt a Pull Influencing Approach: Focus on exploring and listening to others to calm your nerves.
  5. Visualise Success: Picture the perfect outcome to reduce anxiety.
  6. Expose Yourself Gradually: Increase your confidence and skills through repeated exposure.

These strategies have personally helped me, and I’m confident they can help you too. Dive deeper into these techniques and more by listening to the full episode.
