Many moons ago I completed my NLP practitioner training and can never forget the presenter.
He was bold, exuberant and enthusiastic.
He also had a habit that didn’t do him any favours.
His ideas seem to jump around, leaving the audience flipping back and forth in confusion.
Have you ever been in a meeting or presentation where the speaker jumps from one topic to the next, leaving you struggling to follow?
This experience can be disengaging. That’s why mastering the art of the segue is a pretty nifty skill for any speaker or leader.
In this week’s episode of Words That Change Lives, I share the importance of using segues effectively in professional presentations and talks.
Here’s why this seemingly small skill makes a world of difference:
- A segue Is your presentation’s “Connective Tissue.” Think of a segue as the tendon linking one point to the next. Without them, ideas can feel fragmented and disconnected, much like muscles lacking support.
- Clear transitions build engagement and confidence. When your presentation flows, your audience stays with you, following each idea from start to finish. Segues not only keep listeners engaged but also build the speaker’s confidence, providing a roadmap to follow throughout the talk.
- Types of segues to try. There are verbal segues (directly stating the transition), rhetorical segues (using a question to introduce a new point), and conceptual segues (connecting two seemingly different topics with a shared theme).
Each serves a unique purpose, helping speakers move smoothly from one point to another without losing the audience.
Give it a try in your next meeting or presentation and see the impact.
