For years, modern communication has been dominated by one narrative framework: the hero’s journey. And while it’s powerful, I think it can also be a little exhausting, because it teaches people that a story only matters if:

  • there’s a dramatic struggle
  • a villain
  • a breaking point
  • a triumphant return

Which means many thoughtful leaders, experts, founders, and professionals conclude:
“I don’t really have a story.”

I’ve been exploring three alternative storytelling structures that create meaning without requiring your life to become a performance.

1. Kishōtenketsu — the story built on insight, not conflict

This East Asian storytelling structure moves through:

  • introduction
  • development
  • turn
  • conclusion

The power lies in the reframe:
“I suddenly saw something differently.”

For leaders and entrepreneurs, this matters deeply. Because growth can arrive through awareness.

2. Ring Composition — where the meaning lives in the middle

Modern audiences often expect the point of a story to arrive at the end. But ring composition works differently.

It begins with an image, moves inward toward a central truth, and then returns to the original image transformed by meaning.

This structure feels incredibly powerful for leadership communication because mature leadership rarely looks like conquest.

3. Braided Narrative — holding multiple truths at once

This may be the storytelling structure that best reflects modern life.

Because none of us are living one clean narrative.

We are:

  • leading while healing
  • building while doubting
  • speaking while negotiating belonging
  • growing while managing nervous system patterns

Braided narrative allows us to hold:

  • the personal
  • the collective
  • the cultural

At the same time. And that creates resonance.

The more I study story, the more I believe that people want stories that help them feel less alone.
Stories that create trust. and allow complexity without forcing everything into a dramatic arc.

The hero’s journey still has value. But it isn’t the only shape capable of changing lives.
