Early in my career within financial services, I spent years coaching and training exceptionally gifted senior leaders, particularly across actuarial teams.
Through extensive Hogan personality profiling, a clear pattern surfaced: these leaders had reached top tier executive roles because of incredible technical precision. However, their natural profiling traits often leaned heavily toward high scientific reasoning, independent focus, and lower sociability or affiliation.
When these leaders were called upon to hold a room, rally a workforce, or pitch a transformation strategy, their delivery often fell flat. They lacked the natural inclination for traditional “stage presence.”
This was the exact environment where my concept of Conditional Extroversion was born.
We often treat confidence and communication as fixed traits, you’re either an extroverted communicator or an introverted analyst. But confidence is conditional. It depends on the environment, the audience, and most importantly, the vehicle you use to convey your message.
The Universal Equaliser
In testing different communication models, I found one framework that worked seamlessly across every single personality profile, from the outgoing sales director to the highly analytical actuary: Storytelling.
Storytelling is not a soft skill. It is a structured, strategic mechanism that:
- Bypasses Resistance: It disarms analytical audiences by grounding complex data in real world context.
- Builds Undeniable Trust: It reveals the human intent and wisdom behind the decision.
- Levels the Playing Field: It gives quieter, analytical leaders a clear framework to speak with authority without feeling performative.
An Ancient Skill for a Synthetic Era
Storytelling is embedded in human DNA. Thousands of years ago, our ancestors survived by framing meaning through narrative. They built tribes, established culture, and passed down life saving wisdom through stories.
(Check out my podcast season where I explore the history and future of storytelling!)
Today, as AI increasingly handles our data processing, strategy drafting, and content generation, the ability to tell a genuine human story is the single most valuable, unreplicable asset a leader or business owner possesses.
Brighton Summit Week
This week, I am stepping onto the stage at the Brighton Summit to host my workshop, Crafting Your Business Origin Story.
I’ll be sharing the exact 4 part framework I’ve used over two decades to help founders, CEOs, and technical leaders extract their core experiences and turn them into trust-building stories.
Because no matter your personality profile, your industry, or your comfort level on stage, story is the hidden gem already sitting inside you.
Are you attending the Summit this week? Let’s connect in the room!
If you can’t make it to Brighton but want to unlock your own origin story, drop me a DM or comment below. I’d love to share how we can work together.
