There’s an invisible pressure that sits on the shoulders of so many leaders. You feel it when you walk into a boardroom, or when you open your laptop before a client call, or when you hit “record” on that content you’re supposed to share. It whispers: “Don’t mess this up.” “Look the part.” “Say the right thing.” “Be that version of you that gets taken seriously.” And so, without even realising it, you start performing! You speak in polished soundbites or overuse jargon or biz terms. You share strategies that feel more like scripts. You may tell a little white lie to sound better or impress a stakeholder. You start shaping your presence around what others expect, instead of who you really are. Are you trying to be fake? Hell no! You’ve just learned to put on the leadership costume because that’s what the world seems to reward. But of course there’s a problem with this. Over time, it costs you something.

  • The energy it takes to maintain that persona starts to drain you.
  • The disconnection between how you feel and how you act starts to widen.
  • You might even wonder, “Do people actually know me?” or worse, “Have I forgotten who that is?”

If any of that resonates, I want you to know: You’re not alone. And more importantly,  it doesn’t have to be this way. You can lead in a way that is grounded, confident, and real. A way that doesn’t sacrifice your values, your energy, or your integrity. That’s where Authentic Influence® comes in. Over 20 years I have worked with leaders to communicate more confidently and authentically. Over that time, I have collated themes and patterns and approaches that enable you to show up as you, in complete alignment with your values and beliefs.  Let me show you how:

5 Steps to Stop Performing and Start Leading Authentically

  1. Identify Your Leadership Persona

Every leader develops a persona, it’s a natural, often subconscious response to pressure. But not all personas serve us. Are you:

  • Compassionately Hesitant – empathic but hesitant to assert yourself?
  • Deceptively Powerful – assertive but disconnected from relationship or trust?
  • Morally Apathetic – disengaged, unsure where you fit or what matters anymore?

Understanding where you are is the first step toward reclaiming how you want to lead. → Take the Authentic Influence Assessment to find your quadrant.

  1. Reconnect with Your Core Values

Many personas are born from fear  of rejection, or judgment, or not being enough. But your values are your roots. When you know what you stand for,  you don’t have to work so hard to stand up. Try reflecting on:

  • What matters more to me than perception?
  • Where am I compromising who I am to stay accepted or successful?
  • What does integrity look like in practice, not just principle?

3. Name What’s Costing You Your Real Voice Every time you perform instead of just being you, something gets left behind:   So let’s name it:

  • What beliefs are keeping you stuck in a role that doesn’t fit anymore?
  • Whose approval are you still trying to earn, and why?
  • What might it feel like to stop managing perception and start leading with presence?

4. Practice Assertiveness Without Losing Empathy Authenticity isn’t about being blunt and honest, but being real and respectful, at the same time. You can be kind and clear. Empathic and direct. Human and highly effective. Micro-practices to try:

  • Speak up in small, low-stakes situations to build confidence.
  • Use “I” language to express needs with clarity.
  • Make room for others’ input without shrinking your own.

5. Step into the Quadrant of Authentic Influence® This is where influence meets integrity. Where you say what you mean, mean what you say, and are trusted because of it. In this space, you don’t have to trade visibility for vulnerability. You lead from who you are, not who you think you’re supposed to be.

You don’t need to be louder, tougher, or more polished to be an effective leader.

You need to be more of you, present,  honest and aligned. That’s what Authentic Influence® is about. And that’s the journey I’d love to guide you on.
